The truth is, the location you choose helps set the tone and mood for your images. Whether you’re dreaming of a cozy family session, a romantic engagement shoot, or a classic portrait, the right setting makes all the difference.
01.
It’s All About the Light
The most beautiful photos start with great lighting.
- Golden Hour: The hour after sunrise or before sunset gives that warm, soft glow everyone loves. It’s especially flattering for skin tones and adds a magical touch to couple and family photos.
- Overcast Days: Cloudy weather is actually a photographer’s friend — the light is even and gentle, perfect for portraits.
- Midday Shoots: If we shoot during the day, I’ll look for open shade (like under trees or near a building) to keep the light flattering and avoid harsh shadows.
02.
Choose a Setting That Feels Like You
The best location reflects your story and personality.
- For Couples: Think about places that mean something to you — where you had your first date, love to walk together, or feel most relaxed. Beaches (yes those exist in Cincinnati!), parks, or city streets all tell different stories.
- For Families: A location where kids can play and move freely makes for the most natural smiles. Open fields, quiet parks, one of my private settings or even your own backyard can be perfect.
- For Portraits: Simple, clean backgrounds (like textured walls, gardens, or scenic overlooks) help keep the focus on you.
I love helping clients find spots that offer a little variety — opportunities to change up the background, maybe even an outfit change to match!
03.
Keep Crowds and Distractions in Mind
A peaceful, comfortable environment helps everyone relax — especially kids (and camera-shy partners!).
- Quiet Times: Early mornings or weekdays are ideal for avoiding crowds at popular spots.
- Hidden Gems: Some of the best photos come from lesser-known locations — private locations, charming side streets, quiet trails, or local parks most people overlook.
- Simple Backgrounds: I’ll always keep an eye out for things like cars, signs, or people in the background so your photos stay clean and timeless.
04.
Comfort and Convenience Matter
Beautiful photos are easiest to create when everyone feels comfortable.
- Make sure the location is easy to access and walkable — especially if little ones or heels are involved.
- Bring along small comforts like water, snacks, or a blanket for sitting.
- Some parks or gardens require photography permits; I’ll help with any permissions needed ahead of time.
Your experience should feel smooth and enjoyable from start to finish.
Don’t Stress — We’ll Plan It Together
You don’t need to have the perfect place in mind — that’s part of my job! Once I know the look and feel you’re going for, I’ll suggest several locations that fit your vision, lighting needs, and comfort level And sometimes, the best shots happen in unexpected places — a quiet path, a sunlit corner, or even a spot we find on the way. Don't think I'm crazy when I make a random stop and say "just trust me" because those usually become my favorites.
Your photo shoot location should feel like an extension of you — warm, comfortable, and authentic. When you combine that with beautiful light and natural connection, the results are always timeless. Whether we’re capturing your growing family, your love story, or a portrait that celebrates who you are, we’ll choose a setting that makes your photos feel as good as they look.
